North Carolina Passes New Law to Protect Veterans in the VA Claim Process

On October 1, 2025, a new North Carolina law will go into effect — and it’s a big win for veterans.

Senate Bill 118 sets new rules to make sure veterans are protected from predatory practices when seeking help with VA disability claims. We’re here to break it down.

What the New Law Does

This bill regulates how companies and individuals can assist veterans with their VA benefits claims. Some of the main points include:

  • Charging for VA claims assistance— Fees must be reasonable and directly tied to results.

  • No guarantees or false promises — Businesses can’t claim a veteran will get a specific rating or dollar amount.

  • No aggressive solicitation — Veterans shouldn’t be pressured into services.

  • Written agreements required — Before starting services, veterans must receive and sign a clear agreement explaining fees, terms, and a disclosure that free help may be available from accredited sources.

  • Restrictions on medical exams — Companies can’t use a medical provider they employ for secondary exams in claims cases.

  • No unauthorized access to private accounts — Personal logins, passwords, and sensitive records can’t be directly accessed by the company.

Violating these rules is considered an unfair trade practice under state law.

Why This Matters for Veterans

Unfortunately, some veterans have faced high fees, misleading promises, or aggressive sales tactics when seeking help with their benefits. This law ensures more transparency, fair pricing, and informed choice for veterans in North Carolina.

We’ve Been Doing It Right

At United Veteran Benefits Agency, we welcome this change — because it’s exactly how we’ve already been operating.

  • We never charge upfront fees.

  • We provide clear, written agreements before starting work.

  • We give veterans honest expectations and never guarantee results.

  • We encourage veterans to explore all their options, including free services.

Veterans deserve a choice in who helps them, and they deserve to make that choice with all the facts in front of them.

Our Take

North Carolina’s SB 118 is a step in the right direction for protecting those who served. It balances veteran choice with protections against bad actors, and it reinforces what ethical, veteran-focused companies have been doing all along.

If you’re a veteran in North Carolina and have questions about your VA disability benefits, we’re here to help you navigate the process with integrity and respect.
